Note: My Opine on suicidal related news w.r.t. Indian Sub-Continent; Nonetheless can be projected for Pan World!!!

In my previous blogs’ {COVID 19: DEATHS , LOCK DOWN & RECESSION} Fig:1 we have reviewed about top reasons of deaths for India. The one that moved my mind & heart is about the “Suicides” between the age group 15 & 34. To quote an interesting and emotive statistic is that ’’Suicide” is the top reason for the deaths for that age group.

Irony is that Psychiatry, Psychology, Psychotherapy etc.; has not yet observed any booming upsurge either in pedagogy or from the doctoral takers in India. {Note: AIDS has created a niche market for Sexual Specialists} It may be market or inherent bias or ‘Psychology isn’t so tough to understand’; usually people try to limit themselves for a self therapy or a community therapy. Former isn’t helpful at all and latter provide a great relief. On a Hindsight, we should never forget that there is no substitute for an expert advice if we are in a listening mode.

Before reading further; I request to read my earlier blog on  Fear & Stress  where I tried to link both of these concepts with a cute love story; hope you will enjoy reading that blog again. Also, request to read an quick summary/abstract of research article done by Researchers on Stress & Suicide in Adolescents

Let us now explore the Indian Sub-Continent Suicidal data and its reasons. The growth of suicides is on increasing trend with 2% Y-on-Y while that of our population growth is 1% annually.

Quick Highlights from Fig1 & Fig2:

As per WHO, the ratio of Suicidal Attempts : Actual Suicides for this age group is 20:1. Which translates to 8000 suicidal attempts per day for that age group in India. {A suicide attempt is an attempt where a person tries to die by suicide but survives} {Also, the suicide attempts can lead to serious injuries to permanent disabilities}

Fig1: Suicide Causes for Age Group 15 to 30 Years in Indian Sub-Continent.

Fig2: Suicides/Day Trend Chart for Last 12 Years in Indian Sub-Continent {Age Group- 15 Years to 30 Years}

For every suicidal attempt there will be a train of negative thoughts that will happen in our mind that triggers the suicidal event which is usually termed as suicidal thoughts. The Ratio of Suicidal Thoughts: Suicidal Attempts is approximately considered as 5:1 which translates to over-all 40,000 suicidal thoughts per day for this age group alone. May be if we draw unique citizens of these 40K suicidal thoughts it may reduce to 25K; that is almost equal to that of Total Deaths/Day across all age groups in India.

Few may be thinking as what might this be related to that of “COVID-19” situation. The Gravity of suicides committed in India and the required capacity of institutions which can prevent or offer therapy is equal to the medical need for India. Also, suicide can became a situation which can be correlated to the pandemic as well. Let us see some Social Isolation Suicidal causes across in the below table.

Fig3: Social Distancing Suicides across World; { Data still under compilation }

The additional factors that might trigger additional suicides during this Pandemic are “24X7 Anxiety News”, “Social Isolation”, “Economy Stress”, “Future UnEmployment”,“Uncertainty on Vaccine/Therapy” etc.; However, on a positive note as per the so-called pulling-together effect, whereby individuals undergoing a shared experience might support one another, thus strengthening social connectedness. Recent advancements in technology (eg, video conferencing) might facilitate pulling together. Epidemics and pandemics may also alter one’s views on health and mortality, making life more precious, death more fearsome, and suicide less likely.

To Conclude, as per the various studies done by experts the prime reason for suicide remains to be Fear. It happens to be that Fear triggers anxiety which in-turn triggers STRESS. Severe Stress and anxiety further leads to Depression; if aided with isolation may lead to Suicide.  Management of FEAR is utmost necessary to avoid stress and its related activities. UnderstandingOurFear & learning about it helps us to keep a “check on our health”. {Note: Fear is an underrated feeling which is the root cause of our survival as well as failures}

Final Commentary:

Foot Note: According to the National Science Foundation, an average person has about 12,000 to 60,000 thoughts per day. Of those, 80% are negative and 95% are repetitive thoughts. If we repeat those negative thoughts, we think negative way more than we think positive thoughts.
